Baselworld Cancelled – 2021?

Watches & Wonders, The Geneva Motor Show and now Baselworld have all bitten the dust for 2020 thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. The official Baselworld cancelled postponement statement promises a return-to-form in 2021. Given the virus’ uncertain trajectory and the show’s dubious return-on-investment in the Internet Age, that’s hardly a foregone conclusion (hence their “new digital service”). Not that you’d know it reading their statement . . .

New Watch Alert 2/28/20

New watch alert! Coronageddon continues to take its toll on Swiss watchmakers, what with Asian markets down for the count and Baselworld’s 2020 cancellation (not to mention the smartwatch crisis). Baselworld + Coronavirus = The End?

Baselworld coronavirus. Not two words you want to see together. But there they are. In fact, the watch industry schmoozefest is hanging on by a thread. Bulgari announced today that it’s pulling out, blaming both the virus and the success of its recent Dubai watch get-together. The rest of the members of the LVMH group – Hublot, TAG Heuer and Zenith – are still in. For now . . .
